Rila Monastery is one of the symbols of Bulgaria and is also a popular tourist destination. The monastery lies in the valleys of Rila Mountain.

Between Rilska and Drushlyavitsa Rivers, at 1147 m – 3763 ft above sea level. As a matter of fact throughout the centuries Rila Monastery has always been the spiritual, educational and cultural centre of Bulgaria.
The monastery is included in the List of World Cultural Heritage of UNESCO.

The Stob pyramids are one of the most popular rock pyramids in Bulgaria. Also included in the Red Book of Bulgaria as a critically endangered natural habitat. They are located above the village of Stob, in the western part of Rila Mountain. They are a complex composition of sharp and acicular, and for the most part pyramidal or conical earth shapes.

09:00: Tour starts from the parking behind Alexander Nevski Cathedral or at your preferable location if requested in advance at the time of booking. Rila Monastery is located about 120 km away from Sofia and the trip lasts about two hours.
10:30 – 12:30: Visit to the Stob pyramids. It is one of the most popular among the tourists rock pyramids in Bulgaria. They are included in the Red Book of Bulgaria as a critically endangered natural habitat.
13:00 – 14:00: Lunch and relax in a traditional country restaurant while enjoying deliciously prepared food, fine wine and lovely atmosphere.
14:00 – 15:30: Enjoyable afternoon at the Rila Monastery, where you will learn a lot about the history of Bulgaria during the Bulgarian Revival Period (18th – 19th centuries).

15:30 – 16:30: Visit to the cave of Ivan Rilski.
17:00: Departure back to Sofia.
19:00: Expected time of arrival Sofia at the parking lot behind the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral or at your preferable location if requested in advance at the time of booking.

Rila Monastery UNESCO protected World Heritage Site

The monastery was initially situated near the cave where the saint dwelled.

During the Bulgarian Revival Period (18th – 19th centuries) Rila Monastery set up approximately 50 metochions in the large Bulgarian towns and villages where some of the most well-educated Rila monks performed their religious rites, established schools, and brought pilgrims to the monastery.
Museum which exhibits items providing information about the history of the monastery throughout the centuries was established in Rila holy cloister at the end of the 19th century.
The Birth of the Virgin Mary main church of the monastery was built in the place of an old temple.
Exhibition of the farming equipment of the monastery is displayed near Samokov Gate and includes the water-mill, the old monastery furnace, items related to the farming activities of the monastery – forestry, livestock breeding, agriculture, etc.

National Historical Museum

The museum is at the former primary residence of the last communist leader Todor Zhivkov at Boyana, and currently contains over 650,000 objects connected to archaeology, fine arts, history and ethnography.
A number of exhibits outline the greatness of the medieval Bulgarian state – the third empire in Europe (after the Byzantine and Frankish empires). Dozens of remarkable works of fine art and goldsmithing, church utensils, fabrics and manuscripts, icons.
Also here is the rich ethnographic collection of the museum, including traditional clothing, jewelry and more. from all over the country.
Unique monument of Eastern European medieval church art from 1207, under the protection of UNESCO.
Its collections comprise materials dating from prehistoric ages till the present.
