∗ Boarding the Septemvri–Dobrinishte narrow-gauge line. It is operated by Bulgarian State Railways (BDŽ). The journey takes you through the valleys and gorges between Rila mountain, Pirin mountain and the Rhodopes mountain.

You will learn about the creativity of Zahary Zograf (1810-1853), a famous Bulgarian painter of the Bulgarian National Revival, noted for his church mural paintings and icons and often regarded as the founder of secular art in Bulgaria due to the introduction of everyday life elements in his work.

∗ Tour of Sozopol – Sozopol is an ancient seaside town located 35 km south of Burgas on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. Today it is one of the major seaside resorts in the country, known for the Apollonia art and film festiva.
Sozopol is one of the oldest towns on Bulgarian Thrace’s Black Sea coast. The first settlement on the site dates back to the Bronze Age.
The town was founded in the 7th century BC by Greek colonists from Miletus as Antheia (Ancient Greek: Ἄνθεια). The town established itself as a trade and naval centre in the following centuries and became one of the largest and richest Greek colonies in the Black Sea region. Many objects from antiquity, included imported luxury ceramics, red-figure pottery, sgraffito pottery, pottery lamps, loom weights, spindle parts, coins, amphora seals, arrow coins, ceramic game pieces, adornments. One of the most impressive finds was an Attica red-figure pottery krater, depicting the myth about Oedipus and the Sphinx.

Nesebar is a rich city-museum defined by more than three millennia of ever-changing history. The small city exists in two parts separated by a narrow man-made isthmus with the ancient part of the settlement on the peninsula (previously an island), and the more modern section (i.e. hotels, later development) on the mainland side. The older part bears evidence of occupation by a variety of different civilisations over the course of its existence.

The town boasts many architectural monuments from the period, 383 in all, most of which have been restored to their original appearance. Collections of ethnographical treasures, old weapons, National Revival works of art, fine fretwork, household weaves and embroidery, national costumes and typical Bulgarian jewelry have also been preserved. It was here that the first shot of the April Uprising against the Ottoman domination was fired in 1876.

Day 12: Town of Lovech - Troyan Monastery - Koprivshtitsa - Sofia city

Koprivshtitsa is one of the most characteristic Bulgarian towns, still preserving the atmosphere of the Bulgarian National Revival period of the 19th century. The town boasts many architectural monuments from the period, 383 in all, most of which have been restored to their original appearance. Collections of ethnographical treasures, old weapons, National Revival works of art, fine fretwork, household weaves and embroidery, national costumes and typical Bulgarian jewelry have also been preserved. It was here that the first shot of the April Uprising against the Ottoman domination was fired in 1876.

Sofia City
It is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. The city is at the foot of Vitosha mountain in the western part of the country. Being in the center of the Balkans. In fact the city is midway between the Black Sea and the Adriatic Sea, and closest to the Aegean Sea.

Veliko Tarnovo
The medieval fortress Tsarevets, situated on the homonymous peak, surrounded on three sides by the river Yantra. In fact the fortress was built before more than 5,000 years ago, which is proven by archaeological excavations. Also this is a city with many attractions and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Bulgaria. Its unique location on the three hills Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Mount Athos, makes the city one of the most beautiful in Bulgaria. The ancient city can enchant and leave without words anyone who once steps on its narrow cobbled streets.
Town of Varna
It is the third-largest city in Bulgaria and the largest city and seaside resort. Varna developed from a Thracian seaside settlement to a major seaport on the Black Sea.
The oldest gold treasure in the world, belonging to the Varna culture, was discovered in the Varna Necropolis and dated to 4600–4200 BC. Since the discovery of the Varna Necropolis in 1974, 294 burial sites were found, with over 3000 golden items inside.

Town of Shumen
∗ Discover the Madara Rider – It is an early medieval large rock relief carved on the Madara Plateau east of Shumen. The monument is dated in the very late 7th or more often very early 8th century, during the reign of Bulgar Khan Tervel. In 1979 became enlisted on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
∗ Visit the monument to 1300 Years of Bulgaria. Also known as the Founders of the Bulgarian State Monument. It is a large monument built on a plateau above the city of Shumen, Bulgaria. It was built in 1981 to commemorate the 1300th anniversary of the First Bulgarian Empire.
Rila monastry – part of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
It is one of the symbols of Bulgaria and is also a popular tourist destination. The monastery lies in the recesses of Rila Mountain. Between Rilska and Drushlyavitsa Rivers, at 1147 m above mean sea level. Throughout the centuries Rila Monastery has always been the spiritual, educational and cultural centre of Bulgaria.
